FLY ON THE WALL

A FLY ON THE WALL

If I was asked to make one request it would be a strange one indeed. I will wish for some strange gifts; A transforming portion and A time machine.
Oh! If I had these, I would become a fly and flutter all the way back to the streets of Galilee. I will join the swarm around the empty vessels savoring the scent of the vine fruit as Mary made her complaints; “The wine is Finished!”. I will listen for her next words… “whatever he asks you to do, do”. What profound lessons I will learn,

I will watch the master give instructions and watch Water turn bright red… I will revel at the smile on the chairman’s face- “Ah the best you kept for last!”

IF I COULD BE A FLY ON THE WALL

I will flutter around the Son of Themaeus ears, his arms unguided by sight will miss me when he swats. I will watch as His breath increases and His face lights up at the words that are muttered; “ Jesus is Passing by”.

I will stay close like Music to His ears when I see this blind Man rise, I will perceive His faith in the rising cadence of his voice; “Jesus Son of David! Have mercy on Me”

For in the smelly aura of a Man born blind perhaps I will learn how faith does sound. When I see the spit and the mud, I will flutter real close to behold the miracle of how blind eyes see. Perhaps then I will believe the same can happen to me

IF I COULD BE A FLY ON THE WALL
I will flutter close to the well’s edge as a broken Samaritan arrived. I will watch her weary face crease at the inquiries of a Jewish Man in White.

I will listen with delight at This Jew’s words; “if you knew who it was that asked you for a drink” Maybe then I too will get it; WHO HE REALLY IS. For, LIVING WATER is a metaphor too vague for my theology at best to capture.

IF I COULD BE A FLY ON THE WALL

I will endure the stink of a tombed body; 4 days on and I will lie still…giddy with expectation. I will join the swarm invited by the decomposition, if only to be in the right position. I will wait to hear those words I came for and experience the power that brought it forth; “LAZARUS COME FORTH!”

I will watch in wonder as a lifeless blob quaked with life anew. I will watch a command provoke a reversal of a most hopeless situation. With my eyes I will behold death itself defeated by a command!
Perhaps then only will I understand the mystery of resurrection and have my hope renewed that I too shall rise.

IF I COULD BE A FLY ON THE WALL

I Will flutter around the bread at the table, close to the master’s side. Perhaps, His kindness extends to flies, perhaps he wouldn’t swat! I will take good care to stay away from Judas or I may not tell this story.

I will nimble at the crumbs as His “to-be-pierced” hands broke the bread and poured the wine. I will wash my weary feet in the drops that fall on the table top. I will flutter close to the Master’s face, marveling at the purpose in His eyes; The firmness and sorrow that creased His face as He predicted my redemption.

This is my body broken for you and as you eat it, remember me…
Perhaps in those teary words I will perceive His love… the thing that makes a Man lay His life… Maybe then I will get the substance, not the cartoons or the exceedingly romanticized screenplays.

IF I COULD BE A FLY ON THE WALL
I will accompany the sponge of vinegar, what a perfect disguise it will be for none will know my purpose. I will flutter around its sour stench if only I could unnoticed rise higher to behold the raw pain he felt, the sorrow of abandonment and the heavy burden he carried, the weight of sin.

Maybe I will feel a fraction of His agony and be rocked to the core. I will flutter quite close for his hands are nailed… I will see his punctured temple and His broken side… I will hear His loud cries and see his tears flow and I will watch his blood drip and drip and drip….

Maybe then I will appreciate the reason His words compel men to love too… why His love makes Men lay down their lives for others.

IF I COULD BE A FLY ON THE WALL

I will find me a job; pollinating the flowers by the tomb, if only to be in perfect camouflage as I waited for His dawn. 1 day, 2 days and on the third my excitement will know no end. I will watch full bodied guards fall as though dead, blinded by the glory of a heavenly messenger.

I will cower behind the silky petals at the glory of the transaction, where death gave way to life. I will flutter in eternal excitement from petal to petal… oh I will bow at the splendor of this blessed transaction. For maybe then my restless soul will rest in the fact that after this Hard life, there is Glory thereafter

IF I COULD BE A FLY ON THE WALL

And have my time machine, I will embark on the greatest adventure ever and return giddy and firm of heart. For forever my longing is and has always been; OH I WANT TO KNOW WHO JESUS IS!
